508 + InDesign + PDF — Master Class

Master Class with BeviThis is one of Bevi's "Master Classes" that teach practical workflow techniques for real-world publishing.

This master class is for all levels of InDesign users, from entry-level to advanced users. It covers the entire publishing process — starting with Microsoft Word through InDesign to exported, accessible PDFs —complete with time-saving techniques to "make it all work" in a publishing environment.

The class is chock full of Bevi's shortcuts, tips, strategies, and do's and don'ts for desktop publishers who must not only create press-quality files but also accessible PDFs from their InDesign layout files.

These techniques also prepare files for XML publishing, web publishing, and content management systems. Experienced InDesign-ers call this class the "ah-ha, now I understand why" class.

You'll work in 3 software programs: Microsoft Word, Adobe InDesign, and Adobe Acrobat Professional. Topics include:

  • The law: Understanding 508 requirements, WCAG guidelines, the US Access Board's guidelines, and your responsibilities.
  • Features that make PDFs accessible.
  • Formatting Word documents for 508 and import into InDesign.
  • Automating InDesign formatting with Master Pages, Paragraph Styles, Character Styles, and Object Styles.
  • Techniques and strategies for creating InDesign documents that build in 508 accessibility.
  • Creating and maintaining a document's structure for XML and 508-accessibility.
  • Setting the file's metadata.
  • Preflighting files for press.
  • Exporting PDFs for press, print, and 508-accessible web.
  • Using Acrobat to enhance accessibility and add user features in web-quality PDFs.
  • Testing PDFs for accessibility.

This is not a beginner class, so students are expected to be familiar with Adobe InDesign and Microsoft Word, and have some experience producing simple brochures or newsletters. You don't have to be an InDesign wizard, but you do have to know InDesign's basic tools.

This is a 3-day class in order to give Bevi enough time to cover everything you need to know, as well as give you time to practice what you learn.

Prerequisite: This is an intermediate-level class, so you should be comfortable using Adobe InDesign (brochures, newsletters, and other basic documents).

But accessibility isn't just for government documents.

Accessibility is a wise strategy for ALL publishers because the same techniques that aid blind and handicapped audiences also help search engines find and index your material.
