Classes at the Institute at GPO

Logo, GPOBevi Chagnon and Les Greenberg are long-time instructors at the Government Printing Office's Institute (GPO's internal training office). We're proud of our many years of service to federal government publishers worldwide and consider it an honor to work with our colleagues at the GPO for this FY 2010. PubCom has conducted specialized Institute classes for more than 15 years.

Both Les and Bevi are considered experts for federal government publishing: Les is the go-to person for government printing and procurement, while Bevi specializes in design, software, technology, and 508-accessibility for print and web publishing.

PubCom is contracted to teach the following classes at GPO's Institute during FY 2010.

These classes are open only to Federal and District of Columbia agencies, and certain federal contractors. (The GPO is a service agency to other federal government agencies and does not provide these services to commercial enterprises or private individuals.)

PubCom does not process registrations or payments for these classes.

The Best Desktop Publishing Course and Preflighting

This is a best practices class that focuses on ways an agency can get the best printed products fromdesktop-published material. The 4-day class covers the technical requirements for desktop publishing files for printing, proper file submission, and project efficiency. Additional areas covered are: desktop publishing software; font, image and color management; and supplemental information and visuals to accompany electronic files. Techniques for hands-on preflighting is also included.

Printing Processes, Terminology and GPO Forms

This class has been designed to provide attendees with elementary knowledge of basic printing processes and terminology. Minor digital and traditional prepress and printing processes along with other forms of printing (letterpress, gravure, screen printing, duplicating and copying, and digital presses) are discussed.

Additionally, ink on paper and other substrates, spot color, and process color are covered, and paper and envelopes (grades, weights, usage, sizes) and the Government paper system are discussed. Post-press finishing operations and binding, GPO printing procurement, and the Quality Assurance through Attributes Program are covered as are both traditional and desktop publishing.

[Les' class gives a thorough grounding in federal printing, and is an excellent primer for anyone who must procure printing for government agencies. — Bevi]

The US Government Printing Office is a service agency to federal government publishers.

The Institute at GPO is its internal training office that provides classes to all federal government publishers, District of Columbia government publishers, and certain federal government contractors.
